MED-TRONIK’S EAV & “VEGA-type” DIAGNOSTIC

EQUIPMENT WITH THERAPY

At our seven day ‘German Electro-Acupuncture’ Seminar-Workshop held in July of 1982 in Millbrae, California, featuring Dr. Franz Morell and Mr. Hans Brügemann of Germany, they introduced to North America the then very latest addition to the Med-Tronik instrumentation line, namely, the “RM-10/Super”. The OICS Alumni Association originally published the following article shortly after that 1982 seminar (revised April 2001). Current models of this device are also fully capable of VEGA-type testing with optional silver electrodes. Those interested in obtaining one of these units should contact the Occidental Institute Research Foundation.

NOW, A QUALITY GERMAN DIAGNOSTIC UNIT

WITH THERAPY FOR UNDER $3500!

The good people at the Med-Tronik firm in Germany really had their thinking caps on when they researched and developed the “RM-10/SUPER” instrument. Previously we had introduced their “RM-10” diagnostic unit for medication testing and accurate point measurements. However, because of all the inaccurate ‘junk equipment’ offered on the U.S. market purporting to do “EAV” diagnostically and therapeutically, the Med-Tronik firm decided to add a therapy component to their popular “RM-10” unit, and the “RM-10/SUPER” was born. And SUPER it is! It’s giving other German units selling for two and three times the price some real competition, much less all the American- and Canadian-made machines. You just can’t beat German instrumentation quality and accuracy in “EAV” parameters – and its price is right, especially so for those beginners just now entering the field and looking for reasonable, quality equipment.

For those of you short on reading time, let me quickly mention some of the features of this “Super” model. For measurement, both the old “RM-10” [now discontinued] and the new “Super” are far superior to most other so-called “EAV” units for accuracy and indicator action. For point therapy it produces both positive (sedation) and negative (tonification) saw-tooth waveforms, like the expensive larger German units. Therapy output frequency is constant at the optimal 10 Hz standard. It has an excellent built-in tooth potential testing device for measuring battery effects in the oral cavity due to metal amalgam and prosthesis materials – a feature which is usually optional and costs extra. It comes with the most needed accessories, including a very easy to hold point treatment stylus incorporating a therapy activation switch, a medication holder (honeycomb), and Dr. Kramer’s helpful Low Pressure Electrode Tip. The built-in rechargeable battery system uses the latest technology in the field and cannot be overcharged (nor drained to the point of damaging it).

The nicest thing about the RM-10/SUPER unit is its diagnostic meter. Due to its circular configuration it can be read using peripheral vision, rather than direct line-of-sight needed for conventional meters. The meter itself (about 2¼ inches in diameter) is in a circular, clock-like configuration, with the scale extending about 250° around the face, and calibrated from zero to one hundred in two unit increments. The unit is preset by the factory for optimal point measurement sensitivity – and automatically sets the ‘0’ and ‘100’ calibration, so no adjustment knobs are required. It picks up I.D.’s very well; the ‘normal’ scale value is fifty using brass electrodes (and, the stylus also accepts standard Pitterling electrode tips). Audible point location/measuring assistance is available, with volume control.

Now let me tell you about some of its other features:

  1. BNC input jack for the medication testing honeycomb (test sample holder);

  2. The ‘tooth potential’ measurement device automatically recognizes polarity and holds each reading to give time for recording it. Or it remembers the highest reading of a series of measurements which is excellent for a quick testing of the patient’s situation regarding maximum current in the mouth (reading cleared to zero by depressing switch on point treatment stylus);

  3. Full VEGA-type test capabilities with Test Point Regulator knob (using optional silver electrodes);

  4. The overall size of the unit is approximately 8½” x 9” x 3”, and it weighs around 4½ pounds;

  5. Included accessories: Point measurement and treatment stylus with therapy activation switch and connection cables; two brass hand-held electrodes for checking hand/hand conductance level (should be over 80 for reliable testing); Dr. Kramer’s Low Pressure Electrode Tip (brass); two refined silver/Teflon tooth measurement electrodes with white connector adapter; small honeycomb with ½ meter connection cable; power adapter; and, English language operating instructions;

  6. Optional accessories: Set of silver VEGA-type test electrodes; Special “flooding”/therapy cable; cup electrode; large two piece honeycomb; roller for pulsed galvanic therapy.

Here are about the only things that the “RM-10/SUPER” does NOT have which for instance the Pitterling “Dermatron” does (for much more money):

  1. Adjustable frequency and what is known as ‘wave-sweep’ [by choice, automatic and continuous sweeping upward through the entire frequency range from 0.9 to 10 Hz in therapy]. But, this is a costly function to incorporate into a unit and the folks at Med-Tronik were wise not to include it in their “RM-10/SUPER”. The fact of the matter is that most practitioners simply utilize a constant 10 Hz for ninety-five percent of their treatment work. Ten Hertz is a very effective all-round frequency and the best one for flooding, so the Med-Tronik folks chose it for this unit.

  2. Also, it does not have internal switching for ‘quadrant measurement’ so you have to do this externally by connecting to the various electrode pairs (e.g., foot/foot, left foot/left hand). This is hardly a problem since if hand/hand conductance level is sufficient, few practitioners would ever take time to do foot/foot or body/side quadrant measurements.

Bear in mind that the original “Dermatron” does not have the ‘tooth potential’ feature which the “RM-10/SUPER” does. To the Med-Tronik people it was a question of necessary priorities balanced by an attempt to offer the unit at a reasonable cost. I  personally think they’ve got just the right combination of features and price in their unit, and am most pleased with my “Super” unit. I now highly recommend it to all our affiliates interest in either “Voll” or “VEGA-type” techniques.
