Dear Colleague:
It is with greatest sadness I must write and inform you that Dr. Walter D. Sturm,
my husband and lifetime companion, died peacefully in the early morning hours of
Monday, July 5, 2004.
His long struggle with liver disease finally took its toll, and after a brief period of
intense pain and discomfort, he passed away gently and at rest with me by his side.
A memorial service was held for him on Saturday, July 10, 2004. Flowers gratefully
declined. Instead, if you wish, please make a donation in his name to the charity of
your choice.
I want to re-assure all of you that I personally, along with the Directors, Advisors and
staff of the Occidental Institute, will endeavor to continue his work to the best of our
abilities. The Institute will continue in its present format, and we are already making
alternate arrangements for training and research aspects.

In Memoriam

Dr. Walter D. Sturm

(B.Ed., D.Acu., Ph.D., H.M.D.)

* November 23, 1944     July 5, 2004

Walter was a big bear of a guy with a heart of gold. “The boss” ... He loved life, lived it very full, and has without question left his mark on this planet. He was kind and passionate in a Walter sort of way. He pushed boundaries and accepted challenges, and to paraphrase another famous person – “went where no others have gone before”. (Star Trek's James T. Kirk – were you expecting Shakespeare?).

Walter led a very full life with each and every year different than the last. He chose not to live life in the slow lane or to take the safe course whether it was his early days racing cars, tuning pianos and playing the saxophone, or his choice in his life's work. Walter did not accept a status quo. He was always striving to learn more, to question “truths”.

It is somewhat ironic that he started his adult life handing out music scores and teaching the meaning of cadence to young minds, then ended up dedicating his life to doing everything but following the score. From Edmonton, to Toronto, to Montreal, to Miami, to San Francisco, to Vancouver and then finally here in Penticton he chose a path that had no sign posted, no map and no final destination. The pursuit of truth and learning never ended.

This was so for music, arts, politics, business, and of course his greatest passion – medicine. Walter believed that the real truth was not always served up to us on a platter, but rather hidden below the surface. That the veneer the masses saw only hid what was really going on. Walter's obsession was uncovering and peeling the layers off those truths – whether it was with foreign affairs or a patient.

Oh yes, Walter certainly had his opinions and what some may call radical ideals – although they were usually hard to get out of him due to his “shy”nature. It takes a brave man to constantly go out on a limb. But these ideals and opinions made him what he was. The world lost a free thinker, someone who thought outside the box. Walter was willing to take risks and push boundaries – and that is a rare resource in these times.

If we can all take away a bit of Walter and be a little more inquisitive, a bit more doubting, a little more daring, and maybe just a little less concerned about the status quo and what others will think, then I believe that some of Walter’s purpose on this planet will have been filled. That is a lasting legacy that cannot be bought – only earned.

I have always admired people who have tried to make a difference and dedicated their lives to that. Whether it is teaching, raising a family or pursuing some kind of magic bullet, it is the pursuit in and of itself that defines a person. In Walter and Carolyn I found myself admiring their dedication, perseverance and passion. It has helped shape my life – for which I thank you both.

I want everyone to think about the brave manner in which Walter died and lived. We all have been lucky enough to meet a rare person – one that beat to a different drummer than the rest of us. While we may not have the opportunity – as Walter did – to introduce acupuncture to the masses, or the VEGA machine to North America, or train hundreds and hundreds of doctors new and exciting boundary-pushing modalities or techniques, or organize innumerable group tours to Germany to spread knowledge to other doctors, who then themselves went out and touched hundreds of other lives – we do have the ability to live our lives a little more on the edge and to keep his spirit alive.

Carolyn asked me to say a few words at the Memorial Service in honor of Walter and I immediately said, “Yes”. I said yes recognizing it would be my one and only chance to get the last word in, while in the same room as Walter. Walter was a truly rare and unique person. The world will be a much lesser place without his contrarian and questioning approach to life. Walter, thank you for touching mine.

Dr. Sturm’s contributions to the field of biological medicine began in the late 1960’s. The list of firms, methods and remedies that he introduced to North America, and around the world in all English speaking countries, is extensive. It shows his dedication to finding and teaching the best and most effective methods, and his obsession with “keeping the field clean”. Without Dr. Sturm so many of the methods and therapies shown below would be unknown in the English speaking world. I hope you will all join with us at Occidental Institute to honor – and to continue – the work of his lifetime. Here are some of the many “firsts” he introduced to English speaking doctors in North America and abroad:

Ø     Founder of Occidental Institute Research Foundation

Ø     Traditional Acupuncture Training in English for Western doctors

Ø     Electro-Acupuncture According to Voll (EAV/GEA)

Ø     Biological Functions Diagnosis (BFD)

Ø     Dr. Helmut W. Schimmel with the VEGA-Test Method, ART and more recently the Photon Resonance Test (PRT)

Ø     Mayr Therapy with numerous instructors including Dr. Ernst Kojer, Dr. Erich Rauch, Dr. H.U. Havemann and Dr. Walter Wolfrum

Ø     During the thirty Germany tours he organized we heard lectures from such legends of the field as Oswald Bartel, Dr. Gottfried Cornelissen, Dr. Claus Eichhorn, Dr. Ivan Engler, Dr. F.J. Feinen, Dr. Lorenz Geßwein, Dr. Hartmut Heine, Dr. Fritz Kramer, Dr. Heinrich Kremer, Dr. Gustav Krobath, Dr. Wilhelm Langreder, Dr. Wolfgang Ludwig, Dr. Peter Maschke, Dr. Franz Morell, Dr. Gerhard Ohlenschläger, Dr. Fritz Albert Popp, Dr. Dieter Reinstorff, Dr. Heinrich Rossmann, Dr. Erwin Schramm, Dr. Herbert Twarock and so many, many more.

Ø     Remedy firms including Staufen, WALA, Heel, Sanum, Nestmann, Helixor, and Pascoe.

Ø     Highest quality instrumentation including MORA-Therapy and Bio-Electronic Method of Prof. Vincent (BEV and BE-T-A) by Med-Tronik, Bio-Photon Light Therapy by Medical Electronics, Inhaled Ionized Oxygen Therapy by MSS Elektroniks and Ozone Therapy by
Hänsler

A Personal Message to my Dear Friends and Colleagues

I continue to be awed by the hundreds of letters, e-mails and cards that are still arriving daily. I am deeply grateful to each and every one of you for your support during this difficult time of grief, transition and change.

In so many ways, Walter and I have been blessed. We shared 38 years of love and adventure. We traveled around the world and visited so many exciting and fascinating places. We complemented each other from the very beginning and have worked, played and shared together for all of our adult lives.

By the time Walter’s liver disorder was diagnosed he had already been seriously ill for about a year-and-half. When that diagnosis was finally made, they gave him 2 to 3 months to live – and that was four years ago! Daily he used Inhaled Ionized Oxygen Therapy and Bio-Photon Therapy (with remedies). Although it was a struggle, Walter worked almost fulltime until a few days before he died. He was already at work on plans for the forthcoming 31st Group Tour to Germany.

In remembrance of Walter’s great dedication to this field and to bringing quality information to as many practitioners as he could, I feel honored to help carry his work forward into the future. With your continued support we can make his dreams come true.

Take good care of the angels, “Boss” – you will be forever missed!

  Dear Prospective Affiliate:

 ·        In spite of Dr. Sturm’s recent passing, Occidental Institute is moving forward with many of the projects and publications that he had started. During all the confusion and activity leading up to his Memorial Service, Dr. Brian L.
Mac Coy
and I sat down with several advisors to make the necessary official decisions to continue the Institute. You will find enclosed a listing of the new Board of Directors and Advisors.

Here are the highlights of some of the changes. Dr. Mac Coy will be
assuming Dr. Sturm’s patient and teaching schedule, and has also become our new Research Director.
Call OIRF directly to arrange patient referrals or seminar/training program dates with Dr. Mac Coy.

Ms. Michelle Rousseau (my administrative assistant for the past eight years) will move onto the voting Board of Directors as the new Administrator.
I also get a bunch of new titles, but in short I am the Managing Director. During the five-and-a-half years of Dr. Sturm’s illness, Michelle and I have essentially run the Institute (under his guidance of course), and we feel confident we can continue to offer you the quality information and exciting activities that you expect from Occidental Institute.

 ·        Our recent 30th Invitational Group Tour to Germany was very successful with an exceptional group of participants. The two main highlights of the tour were presentations by Lorenz Geßwein and Dr. Gottfried Cornelissen. Both presentations about cancer were well received and we will prepare a report on those sessions for the next Affiliate's newsletter issue.

Finally, however, we do have some news on the ET Screen Pen by
Sanutec
. As you know the Performance 2001 unit by Quadromed (manufactured by Med-Tronik) was discontinued several years ago. That device represented the only objective point measurement method available. During Tour #30 Dr.med.dent. Thomas Hermanns and Dr.med. Erich Krämer presented the latest version of this exciting new “pen”.

The unit actually looks like a pen – and it’s wireless! It uses infrared sensors to talk to your computer (software included with purchase price) and is based on the same principles as the Performance 2001. It offers true objective point and medication testing! Estimated selling price will be around $ 4,750 US unless we can arrange a better deal with Sanutec. We’re working on it!

Our evaluation unit has just arrived, and Dr. Mac Coy is looking forward to working with it. We hope to have them available by September of this year.

 ·        Our next Group Tour to Germany (#31) will be from October 31st to
November 6th
, and will start and end in Frankfurt. It will include the famous Medicine Week Congress in Baden-Baden. Planned lectures include introduction of the Oxi-Med unit (made by Med-Tronik for quick and easy measurement of oxidative stress caused by free radicals – also used for easier evaluation and application of SAG remedies!), a session on the MORA-Super Plus with Electronic Homeopathy, a session on the late Dr. Schimmel’s Photon Resonance Test method, another presentation on the ET Screen Pen (mentioned above), and the usual clinic and pharmacy visits.

Although most of Germany goes on holidays during August of each year, we will be hard at work planning and confirming this program over the summer months. Watch for further details soon.

 ·        Dr. Sturm and I attended a two-day Distributor’s Meeting at Med-Tronik immediately after the end of Tour #30. Once again, Med-Tronik is moving forward with high quality research and development in very innovative areas. One exciting area is the new Oxi-Med unit mentioned above. We’re still waiting for details on this device (cost, availability, and so on), but they anticipate full production shortly with official introduction at Medicine Week this year.

Also, Med-Tronik has introduced a new Electronic Homeopathy program. It is called the “Cancer Test Set according to Dr. Cornelissen. It contains a number of his filter ampules as well as specific cancer evaluation remedies. It is available for $685 US plus shipping and importation.

A reminder for those with Windows Electronic Homeopathy software – Med-Tronik introduced the “Universal Test Set W” last year. It has more than 3,200 organ preparations available in various potencies with the majority of the substances by WALA. This is an invaluable test set if you have not yet added it to your “collection”. Remember Walter always said that the nosodes tell the body what to fix, but the organ preparations are the guided missiles taking the nosodes to their target. This test set is available for $ 1,695 US plus shipping and importation.

 ·        Occidental Institute has added two new books to our list of available
publications. Both of these books were translated and published by Mr. George Kay of Australia. Mr. Kay has had a number of articles, reports and books translated from German to English, and is also responsible for translation of all the instruction manuals for Med-Tronik instrumentation. We send him our thanks and appreciation for his efforts in making this information available in English.

I remind you about Dr. Sturm’s comments in the last (June 3, 2004) mailing. He talked about the ever-increasing cost of the Euro compared to the US Dollar. That exchange rate has increased again over the last month and now usually sits at around $1.25 US for a Euro – at the very best banking rates! In his words: “Consider instrumentation purchases soon – the Euro is not likely to get any cheaper.”

Ø     Inhaled Ionized Oxygen Therapy: There are still a few of the “Oxygen Ion 3000” units available for immediate shipment from our current allotment of units. Price on this latest batch of units has remained steady at $4,875 US each, which includes UPS shipping direct from Austria.

Ø     MORA-Super Plus with Electronic Homeopathy: With the influx of copycat and imitation Bio-Resonance devices on the market, be sure to consider the original when you look at your next purchase. MORA is
the instrumentation that everyone else imitates, and is the only Bio-Resonance unit on the market that is based on serious science through true research and development techniques. All software, manuals and literature are available in English.

Ø     Bio-Photon Light Therapy: With the two units above, the addition of Bio-Photon Light Therapy was the “third leg” of Walter’s three-legged therapy stool. The HPT 3D Standard unit combines 64 laser diodes with 64 special hyper-red diodes to access the bio-photon mechanism of cell communication originally discovered by the German physicist Fritz-Albert Popp. Highly effective not only for skin and hair problems, but also in pain reduction, immunological disorders and exhaustion states.

Contact Carolyn or Michelle for a quote at today’s exchange rates.

Well, that’s about it for this mailing. Once again, I thank you for your support during this period of transition and change, and with all best wishes, I  sincerely remain . . .
